Matthew Groves runs a research group at the University of Groningen, with a main focus on structural biology in drug design. His interest in structural biology began at the University of Oxford, where he enrolled in the first iteration of the biophysics course within the physics bachelor/master program. Excited by this field he approached Sir TL Blundell FRS to study for a PhD as based on Tom’s advice continued with post-doctoral stints at the University of Oxford (again) as well as at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg. Subsequently, he found himself a position as a staff scientist running multiple X-ray crystallographic beamlines at the EMBL in Hamburg, as well as initiating his independent research lines. He established his research group at the University of Groningen in 2013 and now runs multiple project using biophysical tools to use structural information in the discovery of new therapies for human health.
